Part of the research involves the development of electrical and magnetic measurement systems.
Alternating Gradient Field Magnetometer (AGFM)
We have a room temperature alternating gradient field magnetometer which provides magnetic sensitivities of up to 10-11 JT-1 at fields of up to 0.4T. This system was developed by Gwyn Ashcroft as part of his PhD project. Gwyn has generously allowed a chapter of his thesis, devoted to the design and construction of the AGFM, to be made publicly available:
Further details are given in the paper
“Resonant properties of a Flanders alternating gradient field magnetometer: influence of temperature and magnetic moment” Meas. Sci. Technol. 17, 1, (2006).
Low Temperature SQUID Susceptometer
Another piece of instrumentation developed in our laboratory is a low temperature magnetic susceptometer. The system is based on an Oxford Instruments He3 system and a Quantum Design DC SQUID, and offers a magnetic moment sensitivity of 10-12 JT-1 at temperatures between 330mK and 5K. Details of this magnetic susceptometer will be published shortly.
